By centering refugee narratives and agency\, RMCI works to counter dehumanizing statistics and sensationalized visualizations that portray refugees as victims\, threats\, and/or problems to be solved. It is our expressed goal to feature the diversity and complexity of refugee experiences and to affirm that refugees are powerful knowledge producers. At this initial stage\, RMCI is working closely with a community partner\, the Vietnamese Heritage Museum located in Westminster\, CA\, to digitize their refugee artifact collection. Kat Beheshti and Rachel Smith: \nDrs. Kat Beheshti and Rachel Smith are Assistant Researchers at the University of California\, Santa Barbara’s Marine Science Institute. Kat received her PhD from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at University of California\, Santa Cruz in 2021 and Rachel received her PhD from the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia in 2019. As Co-Principal Investigators of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Mitigation Monitoring Program\, Kat and Rachel manage the long-term monitoring of Wheeler North Reef\, a 373-acre artificial reef located off the coast of San Clemente\, and the San Dieguito Wetlands\, a 150-acre wetland restoration located in Del Mar\, as well as the reference reefs and wetlands associated with each project. Coastal marine ecologists by training\, Kat and Rachel bring their expertise working in salt marsh\, mangrove\, oyster reef\, seagrass meadow\, and kelp forest systems to the SONGS program \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Wheeler Reef North: \nTo compensate for the coastal marine resources lost due to the operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Units 2 and 3\, the California Coastal Commission (CCC) required Southern California Edison (SCE) to mitigate for these losses. Part of the mitigation required construction and independent monitoring of an artificial reef (later named Wheeler North Reef) large enough to support 150 acres of medium-to-high density adult giant kelp and 28 tons of fish standing stock. \nTo inform the design of the mitigation reef\, a 25-acre experimental reef was built in 1999. The experimental reef addressed a series of unknowns regarding what reef configuration (substrate type\, substrate cover) would best support a kelp forest community and whether kelp could colonize the reef naturally or if out-planting kelp would be necessary. \nIn 2008\, the 150-acre mitigation reef was constructed and mitigation monitoring began in 2009. The mitigation reef allowed us to determine whether sea fans\, known to monopolize space on some artificial reefs\, excludes kelp on Wheeler North Reef and the years it would take for the community on Wheeler North Reef to resemble that of natural reefs. Lastly\, data from the mitigation reef showed that the Wheeler North Reef was too small to sustain a fish standing stock of 28 tons. Growing up in San Diego\, he filled his time with fishing\, surfing\, and breath-hold spearfishing. At the age of five\, McBride became captivated by fishing after his first offshore fishing experience on the 65′ New Lo-An. From that point on\, he aspired to become a boat captain. At twelve years old\, he got his first opportunity to work on the 65′ sport fisher. Throughout his junior high and high school years\, he spent weekends and summers working on open party and \nlong-range sport fishers\, before transitioning to private yacht-fishers and broadening his exploration horizons.McBride spent a few seasons fishing along the coast of Baja\, California before permanently relocating to Cabo San Lucas\, Mexico\, where he called home for the next 21 years. \nOver the following decade\, Brett served as a deckhand or captain on various sportfishing boats and long-range yacht-fishers\, covering locations from Panama to Alaska and everything in between. During this time\, he devoted much of his attention to fishing marlin tournaments in Southern California and Mexico\, as well as spearfishing. In the early days of spearfishing\, building one’s own speargun was often necessary to obtain a decent one. Brett constructed his first speargun while in high school and continues to build them to this day. His passion for spearfishing led him to develop an interest in underwater filming.He purchased a waterproof housing for his video camera and started capturing his underwater trips. As he continued filming both above and below the water on long-range trips from Costa Rica to Panama\, Brett became increasingly fascinated with creating professional videos to showcase life at sea. \nIn 1998\, Brett received a job offer to run a 48′ sportfisher from a friend who connected him with entrepreneur Chris Fischer. Sharing a passion for the ocean\, they embarked on a partnership\, and when Chris upgraded his boat to a 72′ custom yacht-fisher\, they began their journey in creating outdoor television aboard the 72′ GO FISCH. Their collaboration resulted in “Offshore Adventures”\, an Emmy Award-winning show that dominated outdoor television ratings for 14 consecutive seasons on ESPN Outdoors. They also produced “Ocean Hunter\,” a show with a focus on spearfishing that aired on ESPN Outdoors. \nA pivotal shift in their work occurred when Fischer purchased the 126′ Bering Sea crab fishing vessel\, now known as OCEARCH. In 2010\, Chris asked Brett if they could assist scientists in capturing and releasing adult white sharks at Guadalupe Island. Brett accepted\, marking the beginning of an extraordinary journey. The initial trip was a success and led to the \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ndevelopment of Shark Men\, a television series that showcased the scientific fieldwork involved in the White Shark Tagging efforts of the OCEARCH team. Since its inception\, OCEARCH has completed 45 expeditions around the globe. He works on a wide range of marine mammal species including baleen and toothed whales and dolphins across a range of geographic regions. Ari has long-term ecological research projects ongoing in Alaska\, California\, Massachusetts\, North Carolina\, and Antarctica. He has helped in the development of tag technology and analytical and visualization tools to better understand the underwater movements and behaviors of marine mammals. \nFor his dissertation research\, Ari used geospatial tools to quantify how the distribution of cetaceans related to environmental variables in Antarctica. Ari’s lab focuses on developing new telemetry applications to elucidate the underwater behavior of marine mammals. In Antarctica\, Ari is part of the Long-Term Ecological Research program at Palmer Station to better understand the ecological roles of cetaceans in a rapidly changing environment. In Alaska and Massachusetts\, Ari’s research focuses on variability in the foraging strategies of humpback whales in relation to changes in their prey. In California\, Ari is part of the SoCal Behavioral Response Study to understand the impacts of anthropogenic sound on a variety of cetacean species. An avid paddleboarder living in Laguna Beach\, California\, he has been on the water nearly every day since 2010. An encounter with a pod of 4 orcas in 2015 garnered international media attention and connected him with some of the leading ocean conservationist organizations. When he learned firsthand about the peril our ocean and the marine life are facing\, his hobby turned into a passion to protect them. In 2017\, he founded the Project O\, dedicated to restoring\, protecting\, and sustaining the oceans and the sacred life within it. Rich’s third book\, Blue Laguna\, chronicles his up close and personal experiences with dolphins and whales. The book is available for sale and 100% of proceeds go to Project O. Grant: Administrator at Orange Coast College for 34 years.  He was named the College’s president in August 1989. He served in that position until 1997. \nDave was born in Southern California and grew up in the Harbor area.  He graduated from Newport Harbor High School and Orange Coast College.  He received his BA in political science at UCLA and his MA in American history from Cal State University\, Long Beach.  He also did post-graduate work at Stanford\, University of Stockholm and University of Oslo. \nIn 1963 Dave was selected to be an OCC history instructor and head rowing coach.  He served as Assistant Dean of Students from 64-1974 and as the Dean of Students from 1975-1986.  He then served as Director of Marine Programs\, Facilities and Services for OCC for three years prior to being named as OCC’s College President. \nAs College President\, Dave was intensely involved in all its operations\, raising substantial amounts of money from the outside for College needs: The remodel of the Robert B. Moore Theatre\, the Student Center and the new Harry and Grace Steele Children’s Center.  He championed the new Technology Center and set up the College’s first High Technology Group to keep the campus up to speed in technology.    He encouraged a now flourishing international students program\, inaugurated an Honors Program for those students who wanted a particularly rigorous challenge\, established a Transfer Opportunity Center and a Puente Program aimed at assisting Hispanic students as well as a Re-Entry Center\, geared to help women returning to higher education.  He put the College first in the state with a Skills Guarantee Program\, which guarantees the quality of OCC graduates to employers. \nDave selected more than 80 full-time new faculty members\, revitalizing many academic divisions. During his tenure as President of the College\,  he also taught a class five days a week from 6 am to 8 am each morning. For all those reasons\, he was honored by the Governor of California and the California State Legislature. \n The OCC President was inducted into the Intercollegiate Sailing Hall of Fame in Annapolis\, Maryland in 1975 becoming only the sixth West Coast mariner to be given that prestigious honor. \nDuring a 1972 sabbatical leave\, Dave sailed a 28-sloop to Hawaii\, Samoa\, Fiji and New Caledonia\, retracing some of the routes of Capt. James Cook.  He has sailed extensively in New Zealand and Australia\, having competed in the Sydney-Hobart yacht race several times\, circumnavigated NZ’s South Island aboard the College’s sloop Alaska Eagle as well as sailing with that vessel in the Society Islands and through much of Northern Europe.  He has also sailed amongst the Galapagos Islands and competed in several Trans Pacific  and Mexican yacht races.  He has sailed through the Straits of Magellan and was a member of an expedition to South Georgia Island\, 1\,500 miles east of Cape Horn. \n In 1989\, he climbed with a team to the 19\,240 ft. summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. \nDave has been coaching rowing at Orange Coast for most of his adult life\, fitting in those early morning hours 6am to 8am before his “real job” on campus.  During his tenure\, the Pirates have become a formidable rowing power in the US.  His crews have won numerous championships and have competed many times at the Henley Royal Regatta in England.  OCC was the first American college crew to be invited to race in the People’s Republic of China which they did in 1985. He also coached rowing for elite Chinese oarsmen for a summer in Shanghai.   He served as Assistant Rowing Coach for the United States for the 1984 Olympic Games.  Twice he has been featured in the nation’s premier sports magazine\, Sports Illustrated. The united States Rowing Association in 1918  in New York awarded David Grant its highest “Medal of honor”. \nHe has been a significant fundraiser for the College\, having just chaired the committee that raised $substantial funds for the addition to the College’s School of Sailing and Seamanship. \nHe was a leader in establishing the Newport Aquatic Center and served on its Board of Directors for 10 years\, and as its president for four years.  He has been a member of the Orange Coast College Foundation Board since 1989 and was a key member of the team that successfully passed two major bond issues for the Coast Community College Dist. The OCC Collegiate Rowing Center is named for Dave. \nHe served on the Board of Trustees of the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum including a two year term as the President of the Board. At the Nautical Museum he has been a frequent lecturer on historical maritime adventures. \nHe is a member of Newport Harbor Yacht Club\, the Cruising Club of America and the Leander Club at Henley on-Thames\, England.   He is a former Chairman of the OCC Foundation Board of Directors and just completed directing the OCC Planetarium building project.   He was also elected to the public office of Trustee of the Coast Colleges for a third  four year term\, and recently serves as President of the Board of Trustees for the Coast Colleges. After COVID limited job opportunities as a wedding photographer\, Gauna began aerial filming the famed Malibu coastline. His work now involves filming the little-known lives of Californias’ great white sharks by drone. Through countless hours of filming\, his art has bridged into the realm of science\, a testament to the growing importance of citizen science. Thanks to the videos captured by Gauna\, Calfiornias’ white sharks are getting the recognition deserved as ecologically important and misunderstood animals. He has submitted much of his observations and footage to scientists all over\, helping them accumulate the data to understand and protect these species. In addition to sharks\, Gauna has documented the behavior of marine mammals\, sea birds\, and rare open ocean fish. PIER is a non-profit research institute dedicated to the advancement of sustainable fisheries management through applied field research and public education. Sepulveda is a California native that has spent all of his adult life working on or near the water. He has a Masters degree from Cal State Fullerton and he received his PhD from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2005. As a fisherman and scientist\, Sepulveda is interested in pelagic fish movement patterns\, ecology and sustainable fishery development. At PIER\, he has studied the physiology of open ocean fish in an effort to develop alternative fishing gear. In addition to this\, he has worked to improve the management of impacted Southern California species such as White Seabass. Sepulveda has a long history working collaboratively with fishermen\, researchers and managers to address resource concerns and bycatch issues in current day fisheries. From 2001-2020\, the Monterey Bay Aquarium led an international research effort to understand the life cycle\, ecology\, and behavior of young and juvenile white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in Southern California. During the course of this research\, 79 electronic tags (59 PAT and 20 SPOT) were placed on 63 White Sharks to record the species’ movement. The collected data helped document the young sharks’ seasonal migrations\, nursery locations\, fishery interactions\, and habitat shifts arising from ocean warming in the regional waters of Baja California\, Mexico\, and California\, U.S.A. This data spawned dozens of research papers and helped inform local\, state\, and federal fisheries managers in the U.S. and Mexico on the collective knowledge of juvenile White Sharks.  This program supported the Aquarium’s mission to inspire the conservation of the ocean.
