This event connects professionals in the field with the next generation of ocean stewards. This year\, we are kicking off our first annual GIOS Field Day\, where we bring the students to the professionals! This event aims to immerse the students in a professional setting\, seeing the scientists in action\, as well as mitigate the transit of immobile equipment and reduce any limited expression of the profession itself. \nDuring each tour\, a representative of the organization will give an overview of the day-to-day functions and walk through some of the equipment or resources that are specific to this space and commonly used there. \nField Day will include visits to the following locations: \n\nMolina Animal Care Center at the Aquarium of the Pacific\nUCI Samueli School of Engineering Research Labs\nOrange Coast College Dennis Kelly Aquarium\n\n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Field Day Tour Locations\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Molina Animal Care Center at the Aquarium of the Pacific\n \n \n \n \n \n The 14\,000-square-foot Molina Animal Care Center at the Aquarium of the Pacific provides enhanced healthcare to the aquarium’s animals\, as well as opportunities for guests to view veterinary medicine in action. This veterinary hospital includes holding and quarantine tanks for fishes\, marine mammals\, and birds\, an 1\,800-square-foot examination area\, a reptile room\, advanced digital equipment\, interactive kiosks\, and live video feeds for children. One exhibit found here displays coral and sponges that contain compounds that may hold cures for human diseases! Molina Animal Care Center reaches beyond the confines of a place to care for animals. In the spirit of interactive learning\, it allows visitors to watch surgeries\, animal examinations\, and even interact with the Aquarium’s veterinary staff on occasion! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n UCI Samueli School of Engineering Research Labs\n \n \n \n \n \n Managing water and wastewater systems requires a lot of energy\, and producing and distributing energy can impact the environment in many ways. This field focuses on solving these connected challenges by improving water treatment and supply for cities\, farms\, energy production\, and environmental needs. It also explores sustainable ways to manage urban stormwater and enhance chemical and microbiological water treatment processes. Additionally\, it covers innovative methods for generating and distributing energy. A key focus is understanding and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from water treatment and energy production. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dennis Kelly Public Aquarium at Orange Coast College \n \n \n \n \n \n The Dennis Kelly Public Aquarium at Orange Coast College is one of the cornerstones of the Marine Science Department. This means campers who attend multiple weeks will experience new activities each session! \nHow does the alternating schedule work?\n\nOdd-numbered camp weeks will follow one curriculum.\nEven-numbered camp weeks will feature a different set of activities.\nThis ensures a unique experience for campers who attend multiple weeks!\n\nWill my camper repeat activities if they attend multiple weeks?\nCore camp experiences\, such as boat trips\, tide pool hikes\, and kayaking\, will remain the same each week. However\, all other activities will vary based on the alternating curriculum\, so campers will get to explore new themes\, experiments\, and hands-on activities if they attend both an odd and an even week. \nDoes the alternating curriculum apply to all camps?\nYes! All Ocean Institute Summer Camps follow this format\, ensuring variety and excitement across all programs. \nHow do I know which weeks follow which curriculum?\nOdd and even week designations will be listed in the camp session details when registering. Be sure to check the schedule if you’re signing up for multiple weeks! \nWhat if my camper only attends one week?\nNo problem! Each week is designed as a standalone experience\, so whether your camper attends one session or multiple\, they’ll have a fun\, engaging\, and enriching time. \nGive your camper an ever-changing summer of adventure\, discovery\, and hands-on learning! 🌊🚢 \n \n \n \n \n \n My camper is registered for next week! Now what?\n Week Before Camp \nThe week (7 days) before camp sessions begin we will be sending camp reminder emails! If you didn’t receive the email or registered within 7 days of the session starting you can view everything in the folder linked below! \nTo prepare yourself and your camper(s) please see the link below! \n>>Link coming soon!<< \nIt contains: \n\nSession dates and times\nWhat to Bring & Check-in/out\nCamp Maps\nIndividual Camp Schedules\nAdditional Paperwork (if applicable)\n\nPlease review it and if you have additional questions email camps@oceaninstitute.org.  \n \n \n \n \n \n If my camper has a friend in the same camp will they be in the same group? \n In order for the campers to be put in the same instructor group they will need to be registered for the same camp\, during the same week. \nOn the first day of camp\, you can request for your child to be put in the same group as a friend when you drop them off. Please be aware\, if there are any behavioral issues\, campers may have to be seperated into different groups. \n \n \n \n \n \n Safety at Ocean Institute\n Safety & Training at Ocean Institute\nAll Ocean Institute staff undergo fingerprinting\, background checks\, and drug testing upon hire to ensure a safe environment for all campers. \nOur staff receive comprehensive training\, including camp-specific protocols\, Ocean Institute emergency procedures\, CPR\, AED\, and First Aid. They are also trained in vessel safety and emergency response procedures in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations. \nBoth of our vessels are U.S. Coast Guard inspected annually\, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards for all maritime activities. \nWill my child wear a life jacket on the boat?\nLife jackets are onboard all vessels as required by the U.S. Coast Guard but are only distributed in an emergency situation. Our vessels are designed for safe and stable operations\, and all boat trips are supervised by trained staff. \n \n \n \n \n \n What if my camper needs medication at camp?\n Medication Guidelines:\n\nAll medications must be in their original container with the dosage and schedule clearly indicated.\nPrescription medications require a physician’s note confirming the medication\, dosage\, and schedule.\nOver-the-counter medications require a signed note from a legal guardian with the medication name\, dosage\, and schedule.\nA completed Administration of Medication Form must be submitted on the first day of camp.\nCertified staff members with an Administration of Medication Certificate will be responsible for administering medication to campers who require it during the day.\n\nFor campers prone to motion sickness\, please administer medication before arrival or send it with your camper in its original packaging. \n📄 Administration of Medication Form and bring it on the first day of camp. \n \n \n \n \n \n Who can pick-up my camper?\n At Ocean Institute\, camper safety is our top priority. To ensure a secure check-in and check-out process\, we follow these procedures: \n\nAuthorized Pick-Up List – During registration\, parents/guardians must provide a list of adults authorized to pick up their camper. Only individuals on this list will be allowed to check out the camper.\nValid Photo ID Required – All authorized individuals must present a valid photo ID (Driver’s License\, Passport\, etc.) at pick-up.\nDaily Sign-In & Sign-Out – Campers must be signed in and out each day by an adult (18+ years old).\nAdding Authorized Adults – Parents/guardians may add names to the pick-up list during the camp week by contacting Ocean Institute or providing the name at check-in/check-out.\nRestricting Non-Custodial Parents – If a custodial parent wishes to restrict pick-up by a non-custodial parent\, this request must be submitted in writing and the individual should not be listed as an emergency contact.\nEarly Pick-Up – If your camper needs to leave early\, a legal guardian must provide prior authorization and notify the camp administrator.\n\n🚨 Important: Be sure to list full legal names (as shown on ID) for all authorized pick-ups. Labels such as “Grandma” or “Babysitter” will not be accepted. \n \n \n \n \n \n Will you have a waitlist for full camps? \n Yes\, please add your name to the waitlist! \n \n \n \n \n \n What type of activities can I expect?\n Ocean Institute is a safety-conscious organization and works hard to make sure your camper’s experience is the safest possible. We have provided information on activities your child may participate in with a level of risk because of the potential for injury in any activity. Our goal is to mitigate risk\, balancing fun with safety at camp\, so your camper will have an unforgettable experience! \nCampers participate in a variety of hands-on activities with our instructors; while Ocean Institute makes every effort to create a safe and fun learning environment\, the following are activities that may need additional explanation. \nNOTE: Please read carefully\, as each specific activity lists which camp(s) participate. Not all camps participate in all specific activities. \nOutside Activities: All Camps \n Many of the camp activities will occur outside and this usually means in the sun. We provide shade for some activity areas and Ocean Institute requires sunscreen be applied in the morning before camp; campers will be asked to reapply sunscreen during the day. Campers should bring their own sunscreen and are responsible for applying it themselves; staff are available to help! \nMaddie James Seaside Learning Center: All Camps  \nThis floating dock contains labs where campers discover the techniques and technologies used by scientists as well as the Maritime Historical Boathouse for Maritime camp activities. Campers are always supervised\, and the facility has rescue equipment readily available. \nR/V Sea Explorer Cruise: Neptune’s Mysteries\, Buccaneer Adventures\, Ocean Discovery\, Shipwreck Hunters\, Coastal Explorers\, and MSCIA  \nThe R/V Sea Explorer is a federally documented and US Coast Guard certified vessel and does not require the use of passenger life jackets. Approved Coast Guard Certified life jackets are available for use ONLY in the case of an emergency. If you would prefer your camper to wear a life jacket\, you may provide your own and staff will ensure camps wear it; again\, life jackets are not required on this vessel. There is a safety rail around the vessel and campers are always monitored while onboard. R/V Sea Explorer is equipped with heavy scientific gear used to collect samples for camper use during cruises and these areas are marked and off-limits to campers. Like any vessel during times at sea\, the environment of the boat can be slippery and unsteady. Safety orders are given before the vessel departs the dock. \nExploration in the Dana Point Marine Protected Area: Neptune’s Mysteries\, Buccaneer Adventures\, Ocean Discovery\, Coastal Explorers\, and MSCIA  \nCampers visit the tide pools at the Dana Point Marine Protected Area. This is a wilderness area with rough terrain\, uneven footing\, and slippery rocks. Slipping and falling are possible; proper footwear (close-toed\, close-heeled shoes with good traction) is required. Instructors carry first aid kits and radios. Please be aware tides are generally not low enough in the daytime during the summer to guarantee observation of tide pool animals\, but we do our best to explore the intertidal area! \n——————————————————————– \nSpecialized Activities: Camp varies\, please refer to specific camp description.  \nSail on Spirit of Dana Point: \nSpirit of Dana Point is a federally documented and US Coast Guard certified vessel and does not require the use of passenger life jackets. Approved Coast Guard Certified life jackets are available for use ONLY in the case of an emergency. If you would prefer your camper to wear a life jacket\, you may provide your own and staff will ensure they wear it; again\, life jackets are not required on this vessel. There is a safety rail around the vessel and campers are always monitored while onboard. There are lines and spars under pressure\, hydraulics and working pulley systems. As with any vessel during times at sea\, the environment of the ship can be slippery and unsteady. Safety orders are given before the vessel departs the dock. \nKayaking: \nDual sit-on-top kayaks are utilized for kayaking in Dana Point Harbor. There will be two campers per kayak; campers are required to always stay on their kayaks and wear life jackets. There is always an instructor on a separate kayak and a certified lifeguard in a safety boat supervising the activity. \nFishing: \nCampers are supplied with a conventional fishing pole. The staff and captain always supervise campers and no overhead casting is permitted. \nGoing up the Mast in the Bosun’s Chair: (Buccaneer Adventures only) Campers will be lifted\, individually\, 8 – 10 feet off the deck in a traditional ship’s bosun’s chair. The chair has a safety line attached\, handled by an instructor. \nLearning Gunnery: \nCampers practice the arts of an 1800’s gunner aboard the Schooner Spirit of Dana Point’s quarterdeck. Under the supervision of instructors\, campers operate an unloaded replica cannon and gunnery tools to explore how ships defended themselves in the 1800’s. \nRowing Long Boats in the Harbor: \nCampers row traditional long boats in Dana Point Harbor. All campers and instructors are required to wear lifejackets while in the long boat. A lifeguard in a motorized boat with a first aid kit\, radio and life-saving equipment monitors the activities from the water. Campers practice rowing while tied to the dock and then apply their skills in the harbor. \n Laying Aloft on the Practice Yard: \nIn the Maritime Center Barn\, campers climb onto the foot ropes of a replica yard. The foot ropes are 1-3 feet off the ground with mats below and minimum risk of falling. There are gymnastics mats under the yard and the campers are always supervised. \nMoving Cargo with the Cargo Net or Barrel: \nCampers handle lines to move cargo from one place to another using traditional block and tackle systems consisting of wooden blocks and synthetic lines. Campers are given line handling instructions before the activity and are supervised during by an instructor. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summer Camp Information Request\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Name\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Email Address\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Message\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n 15 + 11 = \n \n \n Submit

SUMMARY:Sunset Sail
DESCRIPTION:Set sail aboard the schooner Spirit of Dana Point and experience California from the perspective of an early tall ship explorer. Join the crew to help raise sail\, handle lines\, and steer the ship\, or simply sit back\, relax\, and enjoy the majesty of sailing the seas aboard a tall ship. \nDuring the summer\, enjoy sailing later in the day to take in California’s majestic sunsets from the water! \nMust be four years or older to sail. \nTickets: $65 \n \n BOOK HERE\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Spirit of Dana Point \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer schooner used during the American Revolution. These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5\,000 square feet of sail! \nIt was Dennis Holland’s dream to build an accurate replica from the period when America fought for independence. Armed with talent\, determination\, little money and plans he purchased from the Smithsonian Institution\, he laid the keel in his Orange County yard on May 2\, 1970. Thirteen years later\, this fast privateer was launched and continues to sail the ocean. Everywhere you look on board is the craftsmanship and pride of early America. \nFormerly the Pilgrim of Newport\, the re-named Spirit of Dana Point is an excellent teaching platform where students directly experience life at sea as it has been for hundreds of years.  The 118-ft. schooner is used for living history and at-sea maritime programs throughout the year. \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is also available for public and private charters\, coastal sails\, corporate team building\, and filming opportunities. \nFor private charters\, events or wedding onboard the Spirit of Dana Point please e-mail: events@oceaninstitute.org\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Click here for our Refund and Ticket Transfer Policy.

\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summer Camp Information Request\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Name\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Email Address\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Message\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n 10 + 7 = \n \n \n Submit

DESCRIPTION:Little Currents: Powered by OI + Rivian \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Toddler Time at Rivian South Coast Theater\n \n \n \n \n \n Ocean Institute is thrilled to partner with Rivian during their Toddler Time Wednesdays at the Rivian South Coast Theater in Laguna Beach! Little Currents: Powered by OI + Rivian is designed for children aged 0-2. This engaging program introduces little ones to ocean-inspired sensory experiences that foster early development and parent-child bonding and plant the seeds that can ignite a love for the world around them. Each session features a fun mix of sensory play\, sing-along circles\, themed crafts\, and interactive story time. Modeled after our popular Tiny Tots program\, this pop-up experience provides a safe and welcoming space for toddlers to explore while parents connect and learn about other family-friendly offerings from Ocean Institute.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n First Wednesday of Every Month\, 10 am – 11 am \nRivian South Coast Theater\, 160 South Coast Highway\, Laguna Beach \nRecommended ages 0-2 years old. \nFREE to the public! \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n New Activities Every Class!\n \n \n \n \n \n Themes: \nApril: Conductivity This activity comes from our physics theme and will focus on open and closed circuits! How electricity passes through humans\, and we have a current and how it can pass through other objects and what conductivity is. This can connect to how sharks are able to sense electrical currents. \nMay: Growth ObservationsThis Activity comes from our mad scientist theme\, all about weird\, cool and wacky science Experiments relating back to the ocean but also being precise about the scientific method and making the kids think and see outcomes. Using the predict and outcome model that reflects on the more complex hypothesis and research methods work\, it creates an easy way for kids to begin thinking in that mindset while still having fun. \nJune: How Deep is the Sea?This activity comes from our deep-sea theme\, we try to answer the million-dollar question\, how deep is the Sea? We use a connecting poster to explain the different depths for different layers in the ocean and its range of temperatures. Different deep-sea animals adapt to this freezing temperature\, and its lack of sunlight to provide an energy source\, so they find ways to live without it. \nJuly: Busy BeesThis activity comes from our bug theme\, focusing on insects and all kinds of critters. While relating them to our crawlers in the ocean\, we will focus on some very popular terrestrial insects such as butterflies\, bees\, worms\, and how to handle insects. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n RSVP with Rivian
