SUMMARY:Sail on Spirit of Dana Point
DESCRIPTION:Set sail aboard the schooner Spirit of Dana Point and experience California from the perspective of an early tallship explorer. Join the crew to help raise sail\, handle lines\, and steer the ship\, or simply sit back\, relax and enjoy the majesty of sailing the seas aboard a tallship.\nMust be 4 y.o or older to sail.\nTickets: $65\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n BOOK HERE\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Spirit of Dana Point \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer schooner used during the American Revolution. These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5\,000 square feet of sail! \nIt was Dennis Holland’s dream to build an accurate replica from the period when America fought for independence. Armed with talent\, determination\, little money and plans he purchased from the Smithsonian Institution\, he laid the keel in his Orange County yard on May 2\, 1970. Thirteen years later\, this fast privateer was launched and continues to sail the ocean. Everywhere you look on board is the craftsmanship and pride of early America. \nFormerly the Pilgrim of Newport\, the re-named Spirit of Dana Point is an excellent teaching platform where students directly experience life at sea as it has been for hundreds of years.  The 118-ft. schooner is used for living history and at-sea maritime programs throughout the year. \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is also available for public and private charters\, coastal sails\, corporate team building\, and filming opportunities. \nFor private charters\, events or wedding onboard the Spirit of Dana Point please e-mail: events@oceaninstitute.org \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Click here for our Refund and Ticket Transfer Policy.

By centering refugee narratives and agency\, RMCI works to counter dehumanizing statistics and sensationalized visualizations that portray refugees as victims\, threats\, and/or problems to be solved. It is our expressed goal to feature the diversity and complexity of refugee experiences and to affirm that refugees are powerful knowledge producers. At this initial stage\, RMCI is working closely with a community partner\, the Vietnamese Heritage Museum located in Westminster\, CA\, to digitize their refugee artifact collection. Her presentation will showcase a small portion of the museum’s collection that have been 3D scanned\, including a refugee boat that fled the Vietnam War in 1984 and various items that were made and/or used by refugees.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Wednesday\, October 2\, from 5:30 to 8:00 \nThis event is now virtual! With training in archaeology\, ancient history and digital humanities\, as well as having worked in the tech and non-profit spaces\, she takes an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to both her teaching and her research. She is committed to bridging the academy and the community\, and especially strives to uplift those who are from underrepresented and under-resourced backgrounds.
