SUMMARY:Sail on Spirit of Dana Point
DESCRIPTION:Set sail aboard the schooner Spirit of Dana Point and experience California from the perspective of an early tallship explorer. Join the crew to help raise sail\, handle lines\, and steer the ship\, or simply sit back\, relax and enjoy the majesty of sailing the seas aboard a tallship.\nMust be 4 y.o or older to sail.\nTickets: $65\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n BOOK HERE\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Spirit of Dana Point \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer schooner used during the American Revolution. These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5\,000 square feet of sail! \nIt was Dennis Holland’s dream to build an accurate replica from the period when America fought for independence. Armed with talent\, determination\, little money and plans he purchased from the Smithsonian Institution\, he laid the keel in his Orange County yard on May 2\, 1970. Thirteen years later\, this fast privateer was launched and continues to sail the ocean. Everywhere you look on board is the craftsmanship and pride of early America. \nFormerly the Pilgrim of Newport\, the re-named Spirit of Dana Point is an excellent teaching platform where students directly experience life at sea as it has been for hundreds of years.  The 118-ft. schooner is used for living history and at-sea maritime programs throughout the year. \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is also available for public and private charters\, coastal sails\, corporate team building\, and filming opportunities. \nFor private charters\, events or wedding onboard the Spirit of Dana Point please e-mail: events@oceaninstitute.org\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Click here for our Refund and Ticket Transfer Policy.

DESCRIPTION:Little Currents: Powered by OI + Rivian\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Toddler Time at Rivian South Coast Theater\n \n \n \n \n \n Ocean Institute is thrilled to partner with Rivian during their Toddler Time Wednesdays at the Rivian South Coast Theater in Laguna Beach! Little Currents: Powered by OI + Rivian is designed for children aged 0-2. This engaging program introduces little ones to ocean-inspired sensory experiences that foster early development and parent-child bonding and plant the seeds that can ignite a love for the world around them. Each session features a fun mix of sensory play\, sing-along circles\, themed crafts\, and interactive story time. Modeled after our popular Tiny Tots program\, this pop-up experience provides a safe and welcoming space for toddlers to explore while parents connect and learn about other family-friendly offerings from Ocean Institute.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n First Wednesday of Every Month\, 10 am – 11 am \nRivian South Coast Theater\, 160 South Coast Highway\, Laguna Beach \nRecommended ages 0-2 years old. \nFREE to the public! \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n New Activities Every Class!\n \n \n \n \n \n Themes: \nApril: Conductivity This activity comes from our physics theme and will focus on open and closed circuits! How electricity passes through humans\, and we have a current and how it can pass through other objects and what conductivity is. This can connect to how sharks are able to sense electrical currents. \nMay: Growth ObservationsThis Activity comes from our mad scientist theme\, all about weird\, cool and wacky science Experiments relating back to the ocean but also being precise about the scientific method and making the kids think and see outcomes. Using the predict and outcome model that reflects on the more complex hypothesis and research methods work\, it creates an easy way for kids to begin thinking in that mindset while still having fun. \nJune: How Deep is the Sea?This activity comes from our deep-sea theme\, we try to answer the million-dollar question\, how deep is the Sea? We use a connecting poster to explain the different depths for different layers in the ocean and its range of temperatures. Different deep-sea animals adapt to this freezing temperature\, and its lack of sunlight to provide an energy source\, so they find ways to live without it. \nJuly: Busy BeesThis activity comes from our bug theme\, focusing on insects and all kinds of critters. While relating them to our crawlers in the ocean\, we will focus on some very popular terrestrial insects such as butterflies\, bees\, worms\, and how to handle insects. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n RSVP with Rivian

SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series: Dr. Ben Perlman
DESCRIPTION:The Ocean Institute’s Distinguished Speaker Series\, presented by the Nicholas Endowment\, brings interesting innovations\, real-world research\, exotic experiences\, and delightful discoveries to the surface through powerful presentations from an ocean of experts. Speakers present on a variety of topics ranging from ocean researchers\, ocean authors\, ocean artists\, and ocean athletes. \nLight snacks & Refreshments available for purchase at event. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Distinguished Speaker: Dr. Ben Perlman\n \nPutting science behind the stingray shuffle and other observations with the round stingray\nAround the coastal United States\, stingray strikes account for nearly 2\,500 emergency room visits on an annual basis\, in addition to the several hundreds to thousands of less-serious injuries that do not yield a trip to the hospital. Along California beaches\, the Haller’s Round Ray (Urobatis halleri)\, is responsible for the majority of these interactions\, with anywhere between 200 and 400 stingray-related injuries being reported each year from Seal Beach alone. During summer months\, round stingrays aggregate in warm\, shallow sandy-bottom areas along our coast\, often coinciding with beach goers. While stingray strikes are generally non-life threatening\, their barbs are capable of inflicting deep lacerations while potentially envenomating the victim. Despite the rate at which these encounters occur and the threat that they pose to public safety\, very little is known about the behavior of these stingrays and their tail strike events. We use multiple high-speed cameras and motion tracking software to record and describe the tail strike behavior across the size range of the round stingray. This information\, along with other experiments we are conducting in my lab with round stingrays\, will provide applications relevant to beach safety. \n \n \n \n \n \n Wednesday\, May 7\, from 6:00 to 8:00 \nDoors open at 5:30pm\, talk begins at 6:00pm \n$10 – General \nFREE – Members \nFREE – Students (with Valid ID) \n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n About Dr. Perlman: \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Benjamin Perlman is a full-time lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at California State University\, Long Beach. He is also the principal investigator of the STABB Lab (Stingray And Butterfly Biomechanics). His lab studies the kinematics\, kinetics\, and morphology of animals\, currently focusing on the round stingray. Using high-speed cameras\, material testers\, 3D scanners\, and X-ray imaging\, Ben and his team describe the form and function of stingrays. The STABB Lab is putting the science behind the colloquial SoCal saying\, “do the stingray shuffle!” Also\, Ben teaches an introduction to evolution and diversity course\, general ecology\, human anatomy\, ichthyology\, and scientific communication. He also collaborates with the Catalina Island Conservancy\, taking undergraduate students to Catalina to conduct various field studies across the island\, focusing on the introduced Argentine ant and the endemic shrew. Before he arrived at CSULB\, Ben studied the swimming performance of surfperches at Moss Landing Marine Labs for his Master’s degree\, then completed his Ph.D. at Wake Forest University studying the jumping and swimming kinematics and muscle physiology of an amphibious fish in Belize. He then became a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University focusing on bird wing biomechanics\, then conducted experiments on frog jumping and dragonfly larvae swimming and feeding behaviors at UC Irvine for his second postdoctoral position. \n\n

This event connects professionals in the field with the next generation of ocean stewards. This year\, we are kicking off our first annual GIOS Field Day\, where we bring the students to the professionals! This event aims to immerse the students in a professional setting\, seeing the scientists in action\, as well as mitigate the transit of immobile equipment and reduce any limited expression of the profession itself. \nDuring each tour\, a representative of the organization will give an overview of the day-to-day functions and walk through some of the equipment or resources that are specific to this space and commonly used there. \nField Day will include visits to the following locations: \n\nMolina Animal Care Center at the Aquarium of the Pacific\nUCI Samueli School of Engineering Research Labs\nOrange Coast College Dennis Kelly Aquarium\n\n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Field Day Tour Locations\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Molina Animal Care Center at the Aquarium of the Pacific\n \n \n \n \n \n The 14\,000-square-foot Molina Animal Care Center at the Aquarium of the Pacific provides enhanced healthcare to the aquarium’s animals\, as well as opportunities for guests to view veterinary medicine in action. This veterinary hospital includes holding and quarantine tanks for fishes\, marine mammals\, and birds\, an 1\,800-square-foot examination area\, a reptile room\, advanced digital equipment\, interactive kiosks\, and live video feeds for children. One exhibit found here displays coral and sponges that contain compounds that may hold cures for human diseases! Molina Animal Care Center reaches beyond the confines of a place to care for animals. In the spirit of interactive learning\, it allows visitors to watch surgeries\, animal examinations\, and even interact with the Aquarium’s veterinary staff on occasion! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n UCI Samueli School of Engineering Research Labs\n \n \n \n \n \n Managing water and wastewater systems requires a lot of energy\, and producing and distributing energy can impact the environment in many ways. This field focuses on solving these connected challenges by improving water treatment and supply for cities\, farms\, energy production\, and environmental needs. It also explores sustainable ways to manage urban stormwater and enhance chemical and microbiological water treatment processes. Additionally\, it covers innovative methods for generating and distributing energy. A key focus is understanding and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from water treatment and energy production. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dennis Kelly Public Aquarium at Orange Coast College \n \n \n \n \n \n The Dennis Kelly Public Aquarium at Orange Coast College is one of the cornerstones of the Marine Science Department. This versatile resource is a unique training and community education facility where students get hands-on experience working with a remarkably diverse collection of aquatic organisms. The OCC Aquarium is a student-run aquarium that features facilitated peer education and helps provide a depth of experiential learning unrivaled by traditional lectures\, textbooks\, photos\, and videos. Students working towards the Certificate in Aquarium Science play an active role in the design\, maintenance\, and management of the OCC Aquarium. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Frequently Asked Questions \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n I have heard of Girls in Ocean Science\, but what is Field Day?\n Ocean Institute is excited to launch our first ever\, Girls in Ocean Science Field Day! \nGirls in Ocean Science – This is an annual\, one-day\, teen conference at Ocean Institute\, inviting middle school and high school students to meet\, learn from\, and conduct research with female professionals in fields relating to ocean science. \nField Day – This is our first event\, where we flip the script and take our middle school and high school guests to these professional workspaces for behind-the-scenes tours.
