These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5\,000 square feet of sail! \nIt was Dennis Holland’s dream to build an accurate replica from the period when America fought for independence. Armed with talent\, determination\, little money and plans he purchased from the Smithsonian Institution\, he laid the keel in his Orange County yard on May 2\, 1970. Thirteen years later\, this fast privateer was launched and continues to sail the ocean. Everywhere you look on board is the craftsmanship and pride of early America. \nFormerly the Pilgrim of Newport\, the re-named Spirit of Dana Point is an excellent teaching platform where students directly experience life at sea as it has been for hundreds of years.  The 118-ft. schooner is used for living history and at-sea maritime programs throughout the year. \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is also available for public and private charters\, coastal sails\, corporate team building\, and filming opportunities. \nFor private charters\, events or wedding onboard the Spirit of Dana Point please e-mail: events@oceaninstitute.org\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n F.A.Q.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Can I bring food and drinks onboard?\n You are welcome to bring snacks\, water\, or soft drinks on the ship. During that time\, he worked as a Paramedic\, USAR Rescue Specialist\, Safety Officer\, Hazardous Materials Technician\, Fire Investigator\, and Drone Pilot. Bill has volunteered since 2017 with a local marine mammal rescue facility where he gained valuable experience working with NOAA’s West Coast Whale Disentanglement Team. With this experience\, Bill partnered with co-founders Wendy Leeds\, Lindsey Van Schoick\, and Justin Van Schoick to establish Entangled Whale Response of Orange County (EWROC) to enhance Orange County’s whale entanglement response efforts. EWROC has partnered with Ocean Institute to collaborate on the 2025 Maritime Festival\, engaging with the community to spread awareness about whale entanglements. Bill is now a level 3 whale entanglement responder with experience on multiple entanglement events. He is also an FAA Part 107 licenses Drone Pilot. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Wednesday\, March 4 \n6:00pm – 8:00pm \nDoors open at 5:30pm\, talk begins at 6:00pm \n$10  – General \nFREE – Members \nFREE – Students (with Valid ID) \n  \n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Entangled Whale Response Orange County (EWROC): \n\n\n\n\nWe are passionate about our efforts to minimize the suffering of entangled whales off the Orange County coastline. We believe the data gathered from entanglement gear can help with broader regional efforts to affect positive changes in the commercial fishing industry that will minimize opportunities for entanglement. We strive to strengthen the relationships within the Orange County Whale Watch/Research community that will benefit all whales passing through the offshore waters of Southern California.

SUMMARY:Little Currents: Powered by OI + Rivian
DESCRIPTION:Toddler Time at Rivian South Coast Theater\n \n \n \n \n \n Ocean Institute is thrilled to partner with Rivian during their Toddler Time Wednesdays at the Rivian South Coast Theater in Laguna Beach! Little Currents: Powered by OI + Rivian is designed for children aged 0-2. This engaging program introduces little ones to ocean-inspired sensory experiences that foster early development and parent-child bonding and plant the seeds that can ignite a love for the world around them. Each session features a fun mix of sensory play\, sing-along circles\, themed crafts\, and interactive story time. Modeled after our popular Tiny Tots program\, this pop-up experience provides a safe and welcoming space for toddlers to explore while parents connect and learn about other family-friendly offerings from Ocean Institute. \n \n \n \n \n \n Location: Rivian South Coast Theater\, 160 South Coast Highway\, Laguna Beach\nRecommended ages 0-2 years old. \nFREE to the public! \n \n \n \n \n \n March Theme: Sharks\nToday we will focus on Shark Skin Texture. Sharks are covered in dermal denticles which are scales that are lined in one direction\, from head to tail. These dermal denticles are closer related to teeth rather than fish scales and help with less resistance when swimming.    \n \n RSVP

SUMMARY:Sea Shanty Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Sea Shanty Sundays\n \n \n \n \n \n Ahoy mateys! You are invited to sing sea shanties with the pirate band\, Queen Anne’s Blouse\, on the Spirit of Dana Point docked at Ocean Institute’s Maritime Village! \n \n \n \n \n \n This is your opportunity to dress\, talk\, and sing like a pirate. Bring your family and friends and enjoy singing along to classic and original sea shanties based on our fascinating maritime history.  Get an introduction to the life of a sailor on a tall ship.  Learn nautical terms and phrases.  Hear stories about the legendary sea cave\, Richard Henry Dana Jr.\, and the real pirate who attacked San Juan Capistrano in 1818.\n \n \n \n \n \n Costumes are welcome\, but not required!\n\nIncluded with General Admission!\n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Spirit of Dana Point \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer schooner used during the American Revolution. \nFor private charters\, events or wedding onboard the Spirit of Dana Point please e-mail: events@oceaninstitute.org\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Click here for our Refund and Ticket Transfer Policy.
