Rising from the swamps of the southern delta\, their music soars with stories of red sky redemption. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Opener- Sage Escalante\n Sage Escalante is a 19 year old singer/songwriter and performer from Laguna Niguel\, California. While attending Belmont University with a major in songwriting and minoring in music business\, she hopes to propel herself into the music business here in Nashville after college. Sage plays piano\, guitar\, ukulele\, and sings. Since her first song ever written when she was 12 years old\, she released her first album in 2021 called “Youth” which she co-produced and wrote all 7 songs. Sage believes that music is healing\, and without it she wouldn’t be who she is today. In 2015\, Sage was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive form of cancer in her rib cage. This caused her to spend a full year in the hospital\, and spent the majority of her time writing songs with the music therapist and learning how to play more and more instruments all by herself. She wouldn’t have discovered the beauty of songwriting if not for battling the horrible disease. Growing up in San Diego\, he filled his time with fishing\, surfing\, and breath-hold spearfishing. At the age of five\, McBride became captivated by fishing after his first offshore fishing experience on the 65′ New Lo-An. From that point on\, he aspired to become a boat captain. At twelve years old\, he got his first opportunity to work on the 65′ sport fisher. Throughout his junior high and high school years\, he spent weekends and summers working on open party and \nlong-range sport fishers\, before transitioning to private yacht-fishers and broadening his exploration horizons.McBride spent a few seasons fishing along the coast of Baja\, California before permanently relocating to Cabo San Lucas\, Mexico\, where he called home for the next 21 years. \nOver the following decade\, Brett served as a deckhand or captain on various sportfishing boats and long-range yacht-fishers\, covering locations from Panama to Alaska and everything in between. During this time\, he devoted much of his attention to fishing marlin tournaments in Southern California and Mexico\, as well as spearfishing. In the early days of spearfishing\, building one’s own speargun was often necessary to obtain a decent one. Brett constructed his first speargun while in high school and continues to build them to this day. His passion for spearfishing led him to develop an interest in underwater filming.He purchased a waterproof housing for his video camera and started capturing his underwater trips. As he continued filming both above and below the water on long-range trips from Costa Rica to Panama\, Brett became increasingly fascinated with creating professional videos to showcase life at sea. \nIn 1998\, Brett received a job offer to run a 48′ sportfisher from a friend who connected him with entrepreneur Chris Fischer. Sharing a passion for the ocean\, they embarked on a partnership\, and when Chris upgraded his boat to a 72′ custom yacht-fisher\, they began their journey in creating outdoor television aboard the 72′ GO FISCH. Their collaboration resulted in “Offshore Adventures”\, an Emmy Award-winning show that dominated outdoor television ratings for 14 consecutive seasons on ESPN Outdoors. They also produced “Ocean Hunter\,” a show with a focus on spearfishing that aired on ESPN Outdoors. \nA pivotal shift in their work occurred when Fischer purchased the 126′ Bering Sea crab fishing vessel\, now known as OCEARCH. In 2010\, Chris asked Brett if they could assist scientists in capturing and releasing adult white sharks at Guadalupe Island. Brett accepted\, marking the beginning of an extraordinary journey. The initial trip was a success and led to the \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ndevelopment of Shark Men\, a television series that showcased the scientific fieldwork involved in the White Shark Tagging efforts of the OCEARCH team. Since its inception\, OCEARCH has completed 45 expeditions around the globe. McBride drew upon his lifetime of water experience to develop the fishing methods used by OCEARCH’s team\, and has played a vital role in the capture\, handling\, and release of over 400 animals studied by OCEARCH. His expertise and leadership has provided researchers across the globe with unprecedented access to study our oceans’ apex predators and push science further. Through countless hours of filming\, his art has bridged into the realm of science\, a testament to the growing importance of citizen science. Thanks to the videos captured by Gauna\, Calfiornias’ white sharks are getting the recognition deserved as ecologically important and misunderstood animals. He has submitted much of his observations and footage to scientists all over\, helping them accumulate the data to understand and protect these species. My education was a combination of mechanical engineering and movement science\, and my early research focused on gait and locomotion in individuals with neurological injury. Recently\, I have become interested in other forms of locomotion\, particularly surfing and skateboarding\, and my research has focused on these areas. More specifically\, paddling mechanics\, balance and wave riding in surfers. \nMy career is intellectually stimulating\, and each day is different. I spend a lot of time reading and thinking about interesting research\, teaching it to others\, and coming up with fun experiments. \nI would like to provide important and impactful information for researchers\, athletes\, and coaches involved in surfing and skateboarding\, particularly as they begin to train athletes for the Olympics. \n \n \n \n \n \n Matt Kibby Forecaster\, Surfline\n I studied at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University\, and achieved a B.S. in Meteorology with a minor in math. Between growing up in\, around and on the ocean\, and becoming quite the weather nerd in my college years\, my career as a Forecaster at Surfline is extraordinary. I can combine two of my biggest passions. \nAs a Forecaster\, I am responsible for surf reports and forecasts along the West Coast of the U.S. and Hawaii\, as well as various international locations. In addition\, I perform statistical analysis of historical surf reports\, and model data for use in long term forecasts and climatological studies. \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Phil Bresnahan Research Engineer\, Scripps Institution of Oceanography\, UC San D iego\n I build tools (sensors and robots) to measure ocean chemistry—especially changes to ocean chemistry resulting from pollution. Right now\, my favorite instrument to work on is called Smartfin; it’s a surfboard fin with sensors embedded in it to measure temperature\, wave motion and position (GPS). We distribute Smartfins to surfers around the world to study their local home breaks\, and become more engaged in stewardship and protection of the waves they love. \nI would like to help scientists learn how to make stronger connections with their communities. There is so much scientific information that most people don’t know—partly because we’re learning new things all the time\, but partly because scientists don’t always know how to connect with non-scientists. I think it would be awesome to help a few more scientists\, especially those doing environmental work\, to figure out what they have in common with their community members outside of the lab. \nPeople come up to me all the time to ask why my fin is blinking and if it scares sharks away. The Hōkūleʻa has been instrumental in reviving and preserving traditional Polynesian navigation techniques. \n\n\n\nThe Moananuiākea Voyage was an expedition that began in 2013 and aimed to sail around the world using traditional navigation methods. The voyage sought to promote environmental sustainability and raise awareness about the importance of protecting the world’s oceans. She was designed by artist and historian Herb Kawainui Kāne\, one of the founders of the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
