Your Experience

The Engineers Wanted! Renewable Energy Overnight program highlights the usage of renewable energy sources, such as wind, sun and water. Students will begin their trip by exploring energy concepts and different ways to harness wind. They also learn how the movement of water in the ocean, in the form of tides, currents and waves, can be harnessed for energy. They learn how to read tide charts and begin to understand the needs and implications of harnessing power from water. In the evening, students will begin to understand the pros and cons of engineering mechanisms that harness renewable sources. Students will design and engineer their very own wind turbine, solar-powered car, and wave energy buoy. Dinner will be provided by the Institute. Students will sleep in our open-air Surf Deck space. In the morning after breakfast (also provided by the Institute) students will go out on our research vessel the R/V Sea Explorer to test their knowledge. This program is packed full of engineering and formulating forward-thinking ideas for a more sustainable future.

Science Overnight Details

Sleeping Arrangements

For our overnight programs, students and adults sleep in a private section of our facility called the Surf Deck. All students and adults sleep in this room. Students sleep on the ground with sleeping bags or blankets (we do not provide) on surfboard shaped padded mats. Adults sleep on the lifted platform beds (total of six, any additional will sleep on floor) that also have a padded mat. An Ocean Institute instructor will sleep in the adjoining room. The curtain in the middle gets lowered to divide girls and boys on separate sides of the room.

Food

All participants will be provided with dinner and breakfast during an overnight program. We encourage students to bring snacks for throughout the program. Some dietary and allergy accommodations can be discussed on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us for more information.
