The Spirit of Privateering

Ocean Institute’s tall ship, the Spirit of Dana Point, is a replica of a 1770s privateering schooner, a common ship during the American Revolution. This exhibit showcases the history of the Spirit of Dana Point, as well as highlights this history of privateering. Featured in this portion of the center are original privateering weapons provided by the Naval Historical Education Foundation. Pieces include a boarding ax, cutlass, sea service pistol, and more!

A Sailor's Life

Step below deck and learn all about what life was like on board a tall ship. The lives of sailors were ones fill with both adventure and hardship. Highlighted in this exhibit is the lifestyles of sailors from their diet and clothing, to navigation skills and responsibilities on board.

The Legacy, Pilgrim

Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana is a staple piece of literature for both the Dana Point community and Maritime Law. This portion of the exhibit highlights the significance of the hide trade as described in the memoir, as well as the hide droughing ship, Pilgrim.
