Meet Octavius
Ocean Institute’s newest underwater buddy!
This Giant Pacific Octopus resides above our main entrance, ready to welcome visitors with open arms, well tentacles, as they step into our underwater world of wonder.
Crafted by Dana Point’s very own @jeffreyskarvanart
This extraordinary creation pays homage to our incredible ocean-dwelling neighbors, reminding us of the importance of being responsible stewards of our beloved coastal environment.
History of Octavius:
Jeffery’s creative vision for “Octavius” sprang to life in response to the City of Laguna Beach Arts Commission’s Call for Artists’ submissions, specifically for a two-year public sculpture installation that would adorn a vintage red K-6 British phone booth. This iconic phone booth, a beloved fixture in downtown Laguna Beach since the 1970s, was the canvas upon which Jeffery’s imagination painted a vivid masterpiece.
Dubbed “Call to Action” in perfect harmony with its unique location, this whimsical octopus sculpture was meticulously crafted to perch atop the phone booth, seizing the attention of passersby. Jeffery’s design brought a touch of the deep sea to this urban landscape, breathing life into the red booth’s classic charm.
During its two-year residence in Laguna Beach as part of the “Call to Action” installation, “Octavius” became a beloved figure, charming millions of visitors and gladly participating in countless selfies. However, as the time came for the sculpture to find a new home, its creator embarked on a mission to secure the perfect location. The Ocean Institute, with its commitment to marine education and conservation, proved to be the ideal destination for “Octavius.”

Making of Octavius:
“Octavius” is not just a work of art; it’s a testament to environmental consciousness and the creative spirit. Constructed with a core composed of recycled single-use plastics, a sturdy wire armature, and fiberglass-reinforced polystyrene, this sculpture is a shining example of sustainable artistry. The tentacles, suckers, and intricate eye details were meticulously crafted using an epoxy clay-like material, lending an astonishing level of realism to the piece.
New Home at Ocean Institute:
Transitioning to its new perch above the Ocean Institute’s main entrance, “Octavius” underwent a series of modifications to ensure it seamlessly blended with its new surroundings. This included sculpting adjustments to several of its tentacles, meticulous paint retouching and restoration, and the application of a UV-resistant gloss coating to protect it from the elements.
For Jeffery, who had visited the Ocean Institute with family many times, there was no better place for “Octavius” to call home in Dana Point. This magnificent sculpture, now a resident of the coastal community, continues to inspire and educate, reminding all who gaze upon it of the beauty of marine life and the importance of preserving our oceans for future generations.
