Maritime Barn

Ocean Institute’s Maritime Barn is a vital educational space that enhances our school field trips and public programs by immersing visitors in the rich tapestry of maritime history. This newly renovated facility offers interactive, hands-on experiences that allow students and community members to explore the traditions and stories of seafaring life. Funded solely by the Nicholas Endowment, the Maritime Barn serves as a unique venue where participants can engage with maritime heritage, fostering a deeper understanding of the ocean and its significance.

Dr. Wendy Leavell, President and CEO of the Ocean Institute, stated, “Our Maritime Barn provides an exciting opportunity for visitors of all ages to connect with our maritime past in a meaningful way.” The transformation of this space not only bolsters our educational offerings but also reinforces the Ocean Institute’s commitment to inspiring future ocean stewards through immersive, experiential learning. By utilizing the Maritime Barn for educational purposes, we are ensuring that maritime history continues to be a vibrant part of our community’s narrative.

The Maritime Barn houses our rotating exhibits to educate guests on different aspects of the maritime world. The current exhibit is all about knot tying where guests can learn how to tie different knots and what they are used for. This is also where our yard is located where guests can learn how sailors would climb aloft to furl and unfurl the sails on a tall ship.
