Virtual Speaker: Dr. Harley Newton
Dr. Harley Newton is a Clinical Veterinarian and Veterinary Pathologist and currently serves as the Chief Veterinarian/Senior Veterinary Scientist for OCEARCH. She specializes in Conservation Medicine with a focus on Aquatics and has a particular interest in elasmobranchs, teleosts and invertebrates. Her elasmobranch research focuses on health assessments of in situ populations and stress physiology. Dr. Newton received her veterinary degree and anatomic pathology training from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine and following her pathology residency completed the Jane and Marshall Steel Pathology Fellowship at the Zoological Society of San Diego. She was Head of
Aquatic Health for the WIldlife Conservation Society from 2014 – 2020, and was a Veterinary Pathologist for Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment from 2020 – 2022. She is board certified in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology and is a consultant Veterinary Pathologist for ZooQuatic Laboratory, LLC, which specializes in disease diagnostics in Aquatic and Wildlife Species.
ABOUT: The Ocean Institute, founded in 1977, is a community-based 501(c)(3) organization that educates 100,000 children, teachers, parents, and visitors annually through over 60 marine science and maritime history programs. We are located on 2.4 acres in the Dana Point Harbor; adjacent to a Marine Life Conservation Area. The facility is an ocean education center that offers in-depth Marine Science and Maritime History. The Institute includes state-of-the-art teaching labs, the spectacular Maddie James Seaside Learning Center, a historic tall ship, and an oceanographic research vessel.
