Lesson Six
Cannons are very important aboard a Tall Ship. Cannons were used mainly for communication. Cannons signaled when you arrived in port, are open to trade with and many other important messages. They were also used for defense when needed. Learn more about our cannon aboard our The Spirit of Dana Point with our Maritime Manager, Kristin McGowan. You will then make your own cannon you can fire at home out of upcycled materials. After you have engineered and fired your cannon, test your knowledge with our activity sheets.

Upcycled Jellies
Lesson Five
This lesson explores the anatomy and life cycle of the moon jelly. Moon jellies are named that because their see through bell (medusa) looks like the moon. While moon jellies have never been to the moon, they have been to space! The Columbia took 2,500 jelly polyps and ephyrae into orbit to study the effects of weightlessness on their development in 1991. Watch the video to learn the basics about moon jellies and make your very own! Then test your knowledge with our activity sheets.

After you have watched the video and made your blubber glove, continue learning with our activity sheets in the Test Your Knowledge section below. Select your grade level and learn more about blubber and marine mammals.
Tying Knots

Join the Director of Maritime, Dan Goldbacher, aboard the Brig Pilgrim and learn how to tie basic knots. You will need a piece of line (rope) and patience. Follow his step by step instructions to get the basic knots down before you go sailing next! The skill of tying a great knot is essential to the life of a sailor and could be the difference between life and death aboard a Tall Ship. Once you have mastered the knots, learn more with out activity sheets.
